It's more meaningful to base your decision on the end result you're looking for than assume a default for a given kind of instrument. "Neutral" means the distortion is full range. I like to put a vocal rider on first so my compressor doesnt have to work as hard. "Keep low" means the low end is not effected. As I say, "Keep High" means the high end is *not* affected. That's not really quite right, about the low / neutral / high switch.
